It hadn’t mattered to her that the youth had been one of the “savages”; believing him in danger, she had jumped in to save him.

Kwan knew he’d become obsessed with Abbey, compelled not only by a physical force, but an emotion pull as well.

I should have sold her to the French, he thought, recalling his first decision. Then I would not hurt so. But he hadn’t sold her to the French. He had listened to O-wee-soo instead. And he would listen to his grandmother again, he realized. Such was his respect for the old woman.

“My son.” O-wee-soo stepped into Kwan’s hut as if conjured up by the dream spirits.

“She is gone,” Kwan murmured. “Ab-bey went with the man—Breck-ing-ridge.”

The old woman’s eyes narrowed as she noted her grandson’s pain. “She will be back.”

He seemed startled. “Back?” he echoed. “She is Yen’-gees—one of them. She will not return to our village. Here she is slave.”

“She will come,” O-wee-soo insisted with confidence. She had seen the look in the white woman’s eyes. Abbey had love for her grandson. Of this, O-wee-soo was certain.

A spasm of emotion crossed Kwan’s face. “You sound sure, my mother. How so?”

The matron smiled with gentle fondness for her dead daughter’s son. “This old woman has been around many summers, Great Arrow. She knows the truth of many things.”

“Great Arrow!” An Indian youth appeared at the sachem’s door. “The white woman—she has returned. She brings daughters of Summer Thunder!”

O-wee-soo chuckled as Kwan shot to his feet. Her grandson’s face told her many things. One ... he loved the white woman, Abbey. “You see?” she said. “O-wee-soo knows. She has come back to you, Great Arrow.”

Kwan seemed to sway on his feet. His face paled, but his silver gaze glistened ... with hope ... and relief.

The grandmother caressed Kwan’s bare shoulder. “Go to her, my son. Go to Ab-bey. She left a slave, but in safely returning Summer Thunder’s daughters, she has come back a true daughter of the Onondaga.”
